If chiropractic isn't the right fit for you, we'll tell you and point you in the right direction
If you're based in Victoria Park or the surrounding suburbs and you're considering seeing a chiropractor for the first time, it helps to know what you're actually walking into. Not the generic version — the specific one. Here's what care at Freeman Chiropractic looks like in practice.
Who comes to see us?
We work with a wide range of patients — from desk workers dealing with persistent neck and upper back stiffness, to athletes managing load and recovery, to pregnant women navigating pelvic and lower back changes, to older patients with long-standing joint discomfort. The most common presentations we see include lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica-type symptoms, shoulder and hip discomfort, and postural complaints. We also see families — including children — and patients referred on from GPs and other health practitioners. If you're not sure whether what you're dealing with is something chiropractic assessment might be useful for, the honest answer is: come in and let's find out.
What happens at your first appointment?
Your first visit runs longer than a standard follow-up — typically around 45 minutes. It has three parts.
The history We start by understanding your symptoms in detail — when they started, what makes them better or worse, what you've already tried, and what your day-to-day life looks like. We also ask about your general health history, medications, and any prior investigations like scans or X-rays.
The assessment This is the part that matters most. We assess your movement, posture, and the function of the relevant joints and surrounding structures. Where appropriate, we include neurological testing. The goal is to form a clear picture of what's contributing to your symptoms — not to jump straight to treatment.
The findings and options At the end of the assessment, we explain what we've found in plain language and discuss the options available to you. If chiropractic care is clinically appropriate, we'll explain what that looks like and answer any questions before you decide. If imaging or referral to another practitioner is warranted, we'll tell you that too. Nothing proceeds without your understanding and consent.
Who are the chiropractors at Freeman Chiropractic?
Dr Alex Freeman Alex founded the practice and has been working as a chiropractor for close to two decades. He uses Gonstead and Diversified techniques and has particular interest in sports care, maternity, and paediatrics. His approach tends toward firm manual adjustment, which suits patients who want a more hands-on style of care.
Dr Joel Maylor Joel comes from an exercise science and sports rehabilitation background, which shapes how he approaches care. Alongside Gonstead and SOT technique, he incorporates drop table, dry needling, and rehabilitation-focused care. He's well suited to patients with sports injuries, movement-related complaints, and those looking for a care approach that bridges chiropractic and exercise rehabilitation.
Both practitioners are registered with AHPRA and work to the same professional standards.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession in Australia. As with any form of healthcare, there are potential benefits and risks, and these vary depending on the individual and the type of care provided. At Freeman Chiropractic, a thorough assessment is always completed before care is recommended — this helps ensure that what we suggest is appropriate for your specific situation. If there are any contraindications to chiropractic care, or if another form of care is more appropriate for you, we will tell you directly.
